Instructions for
looking after latex clothing

Latex clothing is very special because it can't really be compared to other materials in relation to its look and feel. However, this also means that it needs to be taken care of in a special and specific way. There are a number of things that need to be taken into consideration when dealing with this sensitive material in regards to wearing, cleaning and storing the material. Looking after the material in the right way is also crucial when it comes to the longevitiy and durability of the clothing.

General Information

Sweat and other things like body lotion, deodorants and perfumes are released when wearing latex clothing and they then literally get absorbed by the latex. This can have a negative effect on the longevity of the material. Residue on parts of the body where the clothing is additionally stretched, e.g. the armpit area, can also cause the material to age and wear quickly.

It is recommended that a person showers before wearing the latex and then not use deodorants or perfumes after the shower either.

Latex should be kept away from direct sunlight, sharp objects and oils. Too much direct sunlight can dull the material and lead to fading. Sharp objects like long fingernails and jewellery can damage the material. Latex is very robust, due to its elasticity but a small hole is enough to make it tear. Grease, perfumes, oils and some metals (e.g. copper, brass, bronze) react with latex and that means that direct contact should be avoided.

Piercings are therefore also a potential hazard and the wearer should definitely bear this in mind when wearing and handling latex clothing. Care should also be taken when wearing costume jewellery as this can leave slight marks or stains on the material that can’t be removed. That is why jewellery should be removed before wearing any latex clothing. Gloves can also protect the material from long or sharp fingernails. The insoles of shoes can discolour the latex too which means that care should be taken here as well.

Cleaning

Latex easily absorbs sweat and other things and that is why the clothing should be cleaned thoroughly after every use. Latex clothing should only be washed by hand in lukewarm water (approx. 30° C) with a non-greasy detergent like the Special Cleaner (06301950000).
